We had a blast on Saturday, July 16 with hundreds of families at the Mequon Gathering on the Green Family Fun Day. We started the morning prepping beautiful hair for the Disney Princesses from the Mequon-Thiensville Homestead High School Drama Club. We shared fun free hair color and styling during the afternoon. The weather was perfect and there were smiles all around!

Our family-owned Supercuts and Cost Cutters Hair Salons have a strong community partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters in all four Metro-Milwaukee counties. Our stylists host Hair & Hygiene Programs and help recruit “Bigs” (adult mentors) for the non-profit organization. Both “Bigs” and “Littles” receive free haircuts when they visit our salons together.
We are proud of our initiatives with Big Brothers Big Sisters–and even prouder to be associated with the organization. Therefore, we are grateful Channel 12’s (WISN) News Anchor, Kathy Mykleby, chose one of our salons, again, to film “Tuesday’s Child”. Ms. Mykleby visited our brand-new Mequon Supercuts on Tuesday, October 6th, to film a “Tuesday’s Child” news segment.
We personally thank Kathy Mykleby for her commitment to one of our favorite charities by filming “Tuesday’s Child” which introduces “littles” in search of a “Big” to the Channel 12 audience and airs on…you guessed it…Tuesdays.
Every week, in all seven of our Metro-Milwaukee salons, stylists help guests donate their hair to charity.
Donated hair is often used to create wigs for children. There are non-profit organizations which provide hair replacements for kids experiencing hair loss. The two main national programs are Wigs for Kids and Locks for Love. These organizations take donated hair and make custom-fitted hair replacements. Each hair replacement takes 20 to 30 ponytails to construct and has an extremely high retail value. Why is it so expensive? Designing a hair prosthesis for a child is more difficult than creating one for an adult—children have smaller, growing heads and they are more active. The hair replacements are more than just a “wig”. They attach to the child’s head with a suction technique—no glue or bobby pins are needed. This allows the child to go swimming, climb trees, and conquer the balance beam with confidence.
Our Stylists’ step-by-step recommendations for donating hair:
- Donated hair must be at least 10” long. Your stylist will section the hair into several parts to get the longest hair pieces.
- Hair must be very clean and dry prior to mailing it to the charity.
- Once the hair is cut, it must be fully secured with several rubber bands, placed in a secured plastic bag, and packed in a padded envelope. Proper mailing prevents the hair from becoming wet and moldy in transit.
- Be sure to print and complete a donation form from the organization’s website and include it with the hair. Most salons recommend the guest fill-out the form and mail the package themselves, so the donator gets the credit and recognition.
